Here are the meanings of the most common prefixes that might accompany a Lexile measure of a book:

  • BR (Beginning Reader)This code is for texts or with a Lexile measure of 0L or below.

  • AD (Adult Directed)Indicates a book or text is designed to be read aloud to a child by an adult, rather than for the child to read independently.

  • GN (Graphic Novel)Identifies materials that are graphic novels or comic books.

  • HL (High-Low)Describes texts for older students who need content that is less complex and at a lower reading level.

  • NC (Non-Conforming)Used for texts with a Lexile measure significantly higher than typical for their intended audience, suitable for high-ability readers who still need age-appropriate content.

  • NP (Non-Prose)Denotes a text that is not a conventional narrative or prose, such as poems, plays, songs, or recipes, which lack standard punctuation.

Lexile measures always carry the suffix 'L'.
